Road repairs begin in the Sierra Gorda region after the rains

49

Following the intense October rains that impacted several communities in the Sierra Gorda region of Querétaro, authorities began work to rehabilitate damaged municipal roads. A coordinated effort between the State Public Works Commission and the affected communities is prioritizing sections in the municipalities of Pinal de Amoles and San Joaquín, where more than 100 road segments with stability problems and landslides were identified. The recovery began with a gradual approach and using local resources, while a comprehensive inventory is being conducted to determine the most vulnerable routes and define future actions.

Simultaneously, progress is being made in evaluating geological phenomena affecting the region. The Geophysics Institute of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) will be responsible for determining whether the recent microseisms in the area correspond to tectonic activity or, conversely, are the result of instability processes caused by moisture along the region’s fault lines. The region, characterized by its geological complexity, requires specialized attention to prevent further landslides and ensure the safety of its inhabitants.

These types of events highlight the vulnerability of mountainous areas to meteorological and seismic phenomena, making it essential to implement comprehensive strategies for the protection of roads and communities. Coordination among institutions and experts is crucial to reducing risks and strengthening road infrastructure in areas susceptible to natural disasters.
