The Playa del Carmen city council is preparing to create a migrant regulation to establish a framework for this segment of the local population living in vulnerable conditions.
Anaiza Quian, councilwoman and president of the City Council’s Committee on International Affairs and Migrant Assistance, explained that the goal is to create a structured approach to assisting this segment of the population that arrives in the city daily, primarily for work.
“I am currently working on a regulation to establish a foundation because it doesn’t exist and never has, especially given the issues that have been occurring in the United States. I believe it is important to have this regulation in place, since Playa del Carmen is the most important destination in the country,” stated Anaiza Quian.
Playa del Carmen is known for its openness to receiving people not only from other states but also from various nationalities who have arrived in this city seeking a better quality of life due to the available job opportunities.
However, it is well known that abuses often occur against newly arrived migrants, who have frequently even slept on the streets while waiting for job opportunities.
In response, the local government has established the Migrant Assistance Center, where basic needs are addressed for this vulnerable group. Now, with this regulation proposed by the councilwoman, who is also a descendant of the town’s founders, the aim is to guarantee the rights of these individuals.
“What we are proposing is that they have access to support, including lawyers and psychologists, because it is a difficult transition for families. Each case is different, and this support is crucial. For example, when they are deported from another country and want to start over in this country, they should know that here in Playa del Carmen they will receive all the necessary support and guidance,” emphasized Councilwoman Anaiza Quiam.
