Heading into the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Mexico City government announced that rehabilitation work will begin next week on the piers of Cuemanco, Nativitas, and Zacapa, three of the most popular tourist destinations in the southern part of the capital.

The head of the Ministry of the Environment (Sedema), Julia Álvarez Icaza, reported that the work is part of a comprehensive strategy to improve natural spaces and strengthen sustainable tourism, given the expected high influx of national and international visitors during the sporting event.

“We want Xochimilco to be a source of national pride for the world. The trajineras (traditional boats), the canals, and its rich cultural heritage deserve to be preserved and enhanced,” the official stated.

What changes will be made in Xochimilco?

According to the Mexico City Ministry of the Environment (Sedema), the works include improvements to docks, access points, signage, green areas, and drainage systems, with the goal of providing a clean, safe, and functional environment for both visitors and tourism service providers.

The agency published the corresponding public tenders in the Official Gazette of Mexico City to ensure transparency, quality, and sustainability in the works.

It was also noted that the Head of Government, Clara Brugada Molina, announced in June that at least 10 docks will be renovated as part of a comprehensive plan to revitalize the lake area, with an investment that will benefit local communities and boat operators.

Azteca Stadium could host three teams after the 2026 World Cup.
The docks of Cuemanco, Nativitas, and Zacapa are the most popular with tourists, both local and foreign, who come to experience the traditional boats, local cuisine, and cultural life of southern Mexico City.

With the 2026 World Cup, in which Mexico will be one of the main host cities, Mexico City is expected to receive thousands of tourists, positioning Xochimilco as a strategic attraction.

“The goal is not only to prepare for the World Cup, but also to leave behind infrastructure that will serve us in the long term and strengthen sustainable tourism,” local authorities stated.
