More than 40 earthquakes shake Baja California Sur in just two days

2

The ground in Baja California Sur shook again with intensity. More than 40 earthquakes were recorded in different parts of the state on Friday and Saturday, according to the National Seismological Service (SSN). Although most were of low magnitude, the strongest tremor reached 5.5 on the Richter scale near Santa Rosalía, triggering an alert among the coastal population.

The strongest event occurred in the early morning hours of Friday, November 7, at 6:04 a.m., with its epicenter in the sea off the coast of Santa Rosalía.

According to the SSN, the phenomenon originated from activity along the San Ignacio Bay Fault, one of the areas with the greatest tectonic activity in the Gulf of California.

The Attorney General’s Office (FGR) incinerated more than 203 kilos of drugs in Puebla. Three drivers could become NASCAR Mexico Series champions for the first time.
Experts explain that the movements are due to the interaction between the Pacific and North American plates, responsible for the constant micro-earthquakes felt in the region.

According to geological reports, the territory of Baja California Sur is crossed by a system of transform and subduction faults, which explains the recurrence of the tremors.

A strong event on the San Andreas Fault, for example, could be felt weakly in the north of the state, although it rarely causes direct damage due to the distance from the epicenter.

Recommendations in the event of an earthquake

The State Civil Protection Coordination issued a series of preventive measures for the population:

During the earthquake:

Stay calm and do not run.

Go to previously identified safe zones.

Stay away from windows, glass, and objects that could fall.

Do not use elevators or stairs during the shaking.

If you are outside, avoid poles, power lines, or damaged buildings.

After the earthquake:

Wait 10 to 20 minutes before returning home.

Check for possible structural damage.

Use flashlights in case of a power outage and avoid candles or matches.

Stay in contact with the authorities and keep emergency numbers handy.
