Senator Gerardo Fernández Noroña, of the Morena party, experienced a tense visit to the University of Guanajuato, where he was met with shouts, questions, and complaints from a group of students who accused him of acting with privilege, downplaying violence, and avoiding past controversies.

During his presentation, one of the attendees directly confronted him, prompting the senator to challenge him to a debate on stage. However, when the atmosphere escalated, Noroña backed down and blamed the event’s moderator for the disorder.

“A very small group came with the intention of disrupting the session,” he explained.

The senator’s presence is part of activities promoted by Morena in educational institutions to strengthen its presence in academic circles. However, the incident in Guanajuato highlighted the growing discontent that some members of the student community feel toward figures within the party.

Thursday’s demonstrations escalated when a group of young people displayed banners directed at Gerardo Fernández Noroña, questioning his recent trip to Palestine instead of visiting communities affected by flooding in five Mexican states. For the protesters, the Morena party member’s absence during the national emergency was unforgivable.

The students also brought up one of the issues that has most dogged the senator: the purchase of a house valued at approximately 12 million pesos in Tepoztlán, Morelos. The source of the funds for this purchase remains unclear, and the protesters seized the opportunity to demand explanations.

Fernández Noroña has been embroiled in a series of controversies that have kept him under public scrutiny for months. In addition to the controversy surrounding his property in Morelos, his international trips, his confrontational style with opposition legislators when he presided over the Senate, and the physical altercation he had with Alejandro Moreno, the national leader of the PRI, have been questioned.
