Two young men allegedly involved in the murder of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo were found dead near a highway in the state of Michoacán, said Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, governor of the southwestern Mexican state, on Thursday.

The bodies were discovered on Monday near Capácuaro, in an area close to the Uruapan-Paracho highway, Ramírez Bedolla told reporters in Morelia, the capital of Michoacán.

“This is reliable information that has been verified, reviewed, and shared with the Secretary of Public Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch,” the governor said.

The deaths of these two young men, allegedly involved in the crime, would add to the death of Manzo’s suspected attacker, whom the Attorney General’s Office identified as a 17-year-old who was killed moments after shooting the mayor on the night of November 1, at the end of a local festival in Uruapan.

To date, the investigation into Manzo’s murder continues. Both the governor and the Attorney General’s Office have stated they are pursuing the masterminds behind the assassination, as well as the motive.

This Thursday, members of President Claudia Sheinbaum’s cabinet met in Uruapan with the acting mayor, Grecia Quiroz, Manzo’s widow, as well as with local producers, to whom they presented the security plan for Michoacán.

Manzo’s death has sparked numerous social protests. Since taking office in 2024, Manzo repeatedly requested assistance from the federal and state governments to combat the crime plaguing the municipality.
