Despite Canadian alert, foreign tourism in Mexico continues to rise

The Canadian government updated its travel advisory for Mexico on November 13, 2025, warning its citizens to exercise extreme caution due to high levels of crime and kidnapping in certain regions of the country. The advisory, however, does not include restrictions for cities like Morelia or Pátzcuaro, where Canadian tourism maintains a strong presence.

The advisory discourages non-essential travel to several Mexican states due to violence linked to organized crime. Among the affected states are Chiapas, Chihuahua, Colima, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Jalisco, Michoacán, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas, although with specific exceptions.

In the case of Michoacán, the cities of Morelia and Pátzcuaro are excluded from the recommendation, meaning that Canadian tourists can still visit them. The same applies to Zacatecas, Monterrey, Hermosillo, and other tourist cities.

When questioned about the travel alert, Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum stated that the country is aware of the warning and that they will seek dialogue with the Canadian Embassy. However, she noted that “these alerts have not deterred the arrival of Canadian or other tourists,” highlighting an 11% increase in visitors from Canada in the last period.

“Mexico is a beautiful and safe country for tourism, especially in the central and southeastern regions,” she declared.
