The new cold front number 16 entered northwestern Mexico, bringing temperatures as low as -10 degrees Celsius, heavy rain, the first winter storm of the season, and the possibility of snow and hail, according to the weather forecast from the National Meteorological Service (SMN) of the National Water Commission (Conagua).

Starting Friday, November 21, storms are forecast to bring intense rain, lightning, and possible hail to various Mexican states, the SMN reported.

The government agency responsible for disseminating weather information detailed the weather forecast for the second-to-last weekend of the month and issued a series of warnings so that residents can take precautions against the potential for severe weather.

FIRST WINTER STORM OF THE SEASON

This Friday, the new cold front number 16, approaching the northwest of the country, associated with an upper-level cyclonic circulation and a polar trough, interacting with the polar and subtropical jet streams, will give rise to the first winter storm of the season. Very heavy, isolated showers are forecast for Baja California (north and central); heavy, isolated showers in Sonora; and showers with periods of heavy rain in Baja California Sur. These storms will be accompanied by winds with gusts of 40 to 60 km/h in the region, as well as a drop in temperatures and conditions favorable for possible snow and/or sleet in the mountains of northern Baja California and northwestern Sonora.

On the other hand, cold front number 15 will extend over northeastern Mexico and continue its interaction with the subtropical jet stream, maintaining the probability of strong winds and rain with periods of showers in Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas.

Finally, low-pressure troughs in the interior of the country, as well as in southeastern Mexico and the Yucatán Peninsula, combined with the influx of humid air from the Pacific Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean Sea, will generate periods of showers in Quintana Roo, Veracruz (Papaloapan and Olmeca regions), Chiapas, Oaxaca, and Guerrero; and isolated showers in areas of Yucatán, Campeche, Tabasco, Veracruz (Huasteca Alta, Huasteca Baja, Totonaca, Las Montañas, and Capital regions), Puebla, Tlaxcala, Morelos, State of Mexico, Michoacán, Guanajuato, Querétaro, Hidalgo, and San Luis Potosí.

On Saturday, cold front number 15 will gradually move across northeastern Mexico, continuing to be associated with an atmospheric river, maintaining the probability of strong winds, rain, and showers in that region.

SLEET WILL FALL IN BAJA CALIFORNIA, SONORA, CHIHUAHUA, AND DURANGO

The first winter storm and cold front number 16 will move across northwestern and northern Mexico, causing showers and heavy rain, cold to very cold conditions, and very strong to intense winds in the aforementioned regions; as well as snow and/or sleet in the mountains of Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, and Durango.

On Sunday night, the first winter storm will move toward Texas, USA, and will cease to affect the national territory. During Monday, cold front number 16 will move across northeastern Mexico, causing strong winds, rain, and showers in that region.

During the forecast period, the influx of moisture from the Pacific Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, as well as low-pressure troughs in the interior of the country, will maintain the probability of rain and showers in states of eastern, central, southern and southeastern Mexico, including the Yucatan Peninsula.
