Because Mexico will host some matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Durango Tourism Secretariat is preparing an international strategy to position the state as an attractive destination for national and international visitors.

The head of the Tourism Secretariat, Elisa Haro Ruiz, announced that an intensive promotional campaign will begin in January of next year.
Haro Ruiz confirmed that Durango will participate in the International Tourism Fair (Fitur) in Madrid, Spain, and that the dates for the Titan Desert race, a world-class sporting event, will be officially announced at the Spanish Olympic Committee.
Following this presentation, she clarified, various promotional activities will be launched leading up to May, prior to the start of the 2026 World Cup.
The state official pointed out that the intention of the Federal Tourism Secretariat, in coordination with the states, is to prevent the economic impact and visits from being concentrated solely in the three World Cup host cities in Mexico, and to promote the distribution of visitor flow to other regions of the country.
“We know that the three host cities will be congested due to the nature of the event. We are not competing with each other; we are working to ensure that tourists stay in Mexico and don’t go to Canada or the United States,” said Elisa Hariz.
As part of this strategy, Durango has begun networking with travel agencies in Guadalajara and will replicate this model in Monterrey, both key cities due to their role as World Cup host cities and their extensive air connectivity. These cities already have hotel occupancy rates of up to 80 percent.
Haro Ruiz added that this connectivity not only facilitates the arrival of international tourists, but also represents an opportunity for Durango residents themselves, who can take advantage of these airports as departure points to various destinations.
Finally, the secretary concluded that Durango will seek to attract visitors from Guadalajara and Monterrey, capitalizing on the significant traffic generated by both urban centers, especially in a year marked by one of the world’s most important sporting events.
