The US steel industry points out that the largest increase in steel imports from outside the region comes from Mexico, while the Mexican sector notes that North America produces 106 million tons and consumes 130 million.
The US steel industry has raised concerns about Mexico’s role in the North American market imbalance. The American Iron and Steel Institute states that Mexico has become the primary source of growth in steel imports from outside North America, a trend that puts pressure on the USMCA and weakens the regional integration the treaty sought to consolidate.
The document sent to the Office of the United States Trade Representative details that Mexico and Canada’s imports from non-EU countries increased from 12.3 million tons in 2014 to 21.5 million tons in 2024.
“A 75% increase in just 10 years,” emphasizes the association that represents the main US steel producers and companies in their supply chain.
