During the month of December, the municipal government of Querétaro will reinforce breathalyzer checkpoints at various strategic locations throughout the city to reduce incidents related to drunk driving. Up to four checkpoints will be active simultaneously each night, in addition to several afternoon operations, in a coordinated effort to promote road safety during a time characterized by numerous celebrations. The expansion of these measures is a response to a series of previous incidents, including a fatal accident last July that left two victims in Los Arcos, attributed to driving under the influence of alcohol. In this context, local authorities reaffirmed their zero-tolerance policy toward offending drivers and called on citizens to enjoy the festivities responsibly and conscientiously. Furthermore, Mayor Felipe Macías urged the state Congress to expedite the discussion and approval of a bill to increase the penalties to 10 years for those who cause fatal accidents while under the influence of alcohol, with the intention of strengthening road safety and crime prevention policies in the region. The combined efforts of authorities and the population will be fundamental to achieving a safe and tragedy-free December in Querétaro.
