A passenger bus carrying at least 30 students overturned in the municipality of Emiliano Zapata, Veracruz, leaving 20 injured and three dead, including two young people and an elderly woman.

What caused the accident?

The bus was transporting students from the Veracruz Telebachillerato (distance learning high school) and suffered a mechanical failure while traveling on the Palmarejo-Palmar highway, in the central part of the state.

As a result, the driver lost control and the bus ran off the road, overturning into a ravine.

Father of victim demands justice after recurring incidents in the area
In the accident, 18-year-old Celeste López Mota died after being trapped in the wreckage of the bus.

Most of the injured were able to get out on their own; 14 were hospitalized.

A man identified as Celeste’s father demanded justice and that authorities hold those responsible accountable, as this is not the first time such an incident has occurred in the area.

“They told us that the car was already malfunctioning before the downhill section; the engine was already making a clunking noise,” he added.

He said that these vehicles are known to be very old and that they have broken down on this stretch of road before because their brakes fail.

Emergency personnel arrived at the scene to assist the injured and transport them to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
