The Mexican National Deaf Football Team qualified for the Tokyo 2025 Deaflympics through sheer merit: discipline, preparation, and results. However, despite earning their place in the competition, the team did not receive support from CONADE (the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sport) to cover travel expenses, jeopardizing their participation.
Everything changed when Lizzie Rodríguez, the coach’s daughter, posted a video explaining the situation. Her message went viral. What began as a family concern became a national conversation: thousands of users shared the story, media outlets picked it up, and content creators joined in to amplify it.
The viral spread not only highlighted the lack of institutional support but also revealed a familiar pattern: many athletes advance through discipline and merit, even when conditions are unfavorable.
Amid this conversation, Banco Azteca decided to intervene and offer the necessary financing for the team to travel to Tokyo. The bank emphasized that its decision aimed to support the talent, merit, and effort that had already brought the team to this point.
“We are proud to support this Mexican team. They represent talent, discipline, merit, preparation, and perseverance. Our support ensures that resources are where they should be: on the field,” said José Manuel Azpiroz, Communications Director of Grupo Elektra.
A Narrative Built on Effort
The project was structured around the concept “The Sound of Effort,” a narrative that recognizes the team’s perseverance without resorting to paternalistic rhetoric. The focus was on what took them to Tokyo: their talent, their preparation, their discipline, and their athletic journey.
A Story That Transcends the Result
With the resources secured, the Mexican National Deaf Football Team traveled to Tokyo to represent the country in the highest level of competition for deaf athletes. Their participation sends a clear message: when talent exists, constant effort opens doors, and the community, including the private sector, can be the driving force that makes the difference.
The story demonstrated two things:
That true effort and talent are recognized and mobilized, even in challenging environments.
That timely support can transform an obstacle into an opportunity, allowing athletes with real preparation to compete where they should be.
