ABC Medical Center marked a historic milestone in the Mexican healthcare sector by becoming the first institution in Mexico and Latin America to receive the prestigious Magnet® Recognition designation, awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
The ANCC is an organization focused on developing and administering certification programs for nurses and other healthcare professionals in the United States. Its primary objective is to raise the standards for nursing practice while promoting excellence in the field.
Outside the United States, only a few countries have one or more institutions with this designation, which recognizes a level of excellence in nursing, clinical practice, interdisciplinary teamwork, and patient safety.
With this achievement, ABC Medical Center reinforces its ongoing commitment to quality, compassionate care, and innovation in medical treatment.
What does the Magnet® designation mean?
Magnet® is an international accreditation that recognizes hospitals where nursing achieves the highest standards of leadership, training, and patient-centered care.
According to the ANCC (National Association of Clinical Colleges), Magnet® institutions are distinguished by their promotion of advanced clinical practice that enhances the patient experience, strengthens the nursing team, and raises organizational standards.
For ABC Medical Center, this accreditation validates the institution’s commitment to the exceptional delivery of care by the nursing team and all healthcare professionals.
Among the key benefits of this distinction are the strengthening of nursing leadership, comprehensive family-centered care, and continuous improvement in clinical outcomes and staff satisfaction.
Therefore, the accreditation is a strategic quality management framework focused on nursing human capital and comprehensive patient care.
ABC Medical Center’s journey to achieving Magnet® designation encompasses several years of preparation, teamwork, and institutional commitment.
In 2012, ABC Medical Center began its journey to meet the established guidelines, and to this day, the nursing staff continues to work diligently to improve the quality of care.
One of the cornerstones of this achievement was the institution’s long-term vision. This means that ABC Medical Center understood that achieving Magnet® status requires more than simply meeting technical standards; it necessitated transforming the organizational culture, implementing evaluation processes, and strengthening staff training. With this goal in mind, the hospital’s leadership spearheaded a comprehensive strategy that involved both clinical leaders and the entire nursing team.
Throughout this process, ABC Medical Center’s collaboration with Houston Methodist Hospital played a fundamental role, as Houston Methodist Hospital already held this designation. This support enabled ABC to adapt to the highest international standards and learn from established nursing care and management models. Simultaneously, the hospital reviewed its own internal processes, adjusting protocols and optimizing quality indicators.
One of the most notable aspects was the strengthening of nursing’s role within the healthcare system. ABC Medical Center promoted the professionalization of its staff, fostered participatory leadership at all times, encouraged ongoing training, and created growth opportunities that increased job satisfaction and reduced staff turnover. Thanks to this effort, the nursing team achieved a high level of autonomy and commitment, offering evidence-based and patient-centered care.
Finally, in 2024, ABC Medical Center became the first institution in Mexico and Latin America to receive the Magnet® designation, making it the tenth country outside the United States to achieve this distinction. This achievement not only symbolizes international recognition but also sets a benchmark for the country, demonstrating that world-class nursing standards can be achieved within the Mexican healthcare system through vision, commitment, and collaborative work.
