The United States government revoked the visa of Alex Tonatiuh Márquez Hernández, Director General of Customs Investigation at Mexico’s National Customs Agency (ANAM).
Márquez, who was in charge of investigating cases of fuel theft, is now barred from entering the United States.
This visa cancellation makes him the first federal official at ANAM to receive this measure, in a context where Washington has revoked entry permits for dozens of Mexican officials, including governors and former governors, for possible links to illicit activities.
The visa revocation comes as Márquez faces multiple accusations: from the purchase of luxury watches worth around eight million pesos to previous investigations in which he is listed as the legal representative of a company under investigation for simulated transactions and undeclared deposits.
Despite this, the official stated that he plans to apply for a new visa and maintained that this measure, being personal, will not affect his performance within ANAM.
This fact is causing controversy among citizens, since the cancellation has raised doubts about how the withdrawal of visas by the United States is being used as a diplomatic tool in the fight against hydrocarbon smuggling and money laundering in Mexico.
