On December 2nd, Jesús Eduardo Govea Orozco was sworn in before the full Congress of Tamaulipas as the new Attorney General of the State.
In Tamaulipas, Govea Orozco’s appointment opens a new chapter for the administration of justice, backed by extensive experience in criminal law, public safety, and high-level responsibilities within the public service.
But who is Jesús Eduardo Govea Orozco, and what experience led him to this key position?
Who is the new Attorney General of Tamaulipas?
Originally from Morelia, Michoacán, and born on June 22, 1969, Jesús Eduardo Govea Orozco holds a law degree from the Autonomous University of Tamaulipas, which he complemented with a specialization in the Accusatory Criminal Procedure and Oral Trial at the National Institute of Criminal Sciences. He also holds a Master’s degree in Law with an emphasis in Criminal Law from the Technological University of Mexico.
His training includes a wide range of national and international certifications and courses in criminal investigation, adversarial justice, human rights, ethics in public safety, criminal psychology, forgery analysis, weapons identification, and investigative techniques.
Among his accreditations are certification as an instructor from the Coordinating Council for the Implementation of the Criminal Justice System and accreditation from the National Public Security System as a trainer for police institutions.
The depth of his judicial training is further enhanced by courses provided by the Federal Judiciary, the Ministry of National Defense, the then Attorney General’s Office, and the French National Police.
Govea Orozco’s career began in the legal departments of the state government, where he served as an assistant and later as legal director for the System for the Integration of the Population into Urban Development. He subsequently joined the National Migration Institute as part of the Beta Group, working to protect migrants in border areas.
His career within the then-Attorney General’s Office of the State of Tamaulipas was strengthened through positions such as Public Prosecutor, Coordinator, Deputy Director, and Director for the Implementation of the Accusatory Criminal Justice System. In this last role, he led strategic tasks for the transition to the new criminal justice model, as well as training processes and regulatory development.
In recent years, he assumed high-impact responsibilities in the fight against financial crimes by directing the Financial and Economic Intelligence Unit of the Government of Tamaulipas, where he coordinated asset analysis and the detection of irregular transactions.
Currently, prior to being elected Attorney General, he served as head of the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Corruption, where he spearheaded significant investigations. Under his leadership, more than 20 former public officials were indicted, including former secretaries and mayors, and cases that had been stalled since previous administrations were reactivated.
When will the new Attorney General of Tamaulipas take office?
Govea will take office on December 16 and will lead the Tamaulipas State Attorney General’s Office for the next seven years.
It is worth noting that the current Attorney General, Irving Barrios, will leave his post on December 15, after serving for nine years: two at the former Attorney General’s Office and seven at the current Attorney General’s Office.
