The Veracruzana University (UV) is making progress on the construction of its new Faculty of Arts, located in the former Allende prison. The first phase is expected to be completed by the end of January 2026, according to Jorge Genaro Vicente Martínez, Vice-Rector of the Veracruz region.
“The project is underway. We expect the first phase to be ready in the last week of January so we can begin relocating some departments, such as the open art workshops,” the official explained.
It is also anticipated that the undergraduate programs in Hispanic Language and Literature (LENA) and Photography will be relocated before the second phase is completed.
Currently, the project is 90% complete and has required an investment of approximately 30 million pesos. The building’s renovation was preceded by a planning and validation process with the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), due to the building’s historical value. By February, the open workshops and the Music Initiation Center are expected to be operating in the new space.
Initially, the new facility will house 120 students, although enrollment is projected to grow to more than 200. In addition to the students, musical instruments, furniture, and other university property will be relocated.
Vicente Martínez emphasized that this move will alleviate overcrowding in the current facilities, which are already showing signs of saturation. “I don’t want to call it overcrowding, but they are very full. This new space will allow for better accommodation for the artistic groups,” he stated.
New Building for the Institute of Marine Sciences and Fisheries
In addition to the Faculty of Arts project, the University of Veracruz (UV) is constructing a new building for the Institute of Marine Sciences and Fisheries, which will be located at Rancho Torreón del Molino. This project addresses a long-standing need of the institute, which has operated in rented facilities for more than 25 years.
The new building will house laboratories, classrooms, and offices for more than 17 researchers, as well as for students in the master’s and doctoral programs. It will also benefit undergraduate students in Marine Biology, who take courses in collaboration with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
Currently, the institute operates out of two rented houses. The first phase of the new building will also be completed by the end of January, with an investment exceeding 16 million pesos.
The vice-rector reported that, in addition to these projects, maintenance work is being carried out at the Mocambo Campus and other academic units in the region, with the goal of finishing the year in optimal condition and launching new improvement programs in 2026. Finally, he reminded everyone that the academic year ends on December 17, the start of the summer break. The Veracruz region of the University of Veracruz (UV) has an enrollment of over 22,000 students, who began their regular exams on December 7.
