Carnitas from Michoacán received certification from the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI). The head of the institute, Santiago Nieto, personally presented the certification at an event held at the House of Handicrafts (CASART) in Morelia.
“This means that producers must agree; it means that those who meet this level of quality can use this symbol, sending a message to diners that they are enjoying the quality of Michoacán carnitas,” he stated.
The certification is a mark that guarantees that Michoacán carnitas meet standards of quality, hygiene, and authenticity.
Santiago Nieto mentioned that this certification opens the possibility for producers to export to the United States, while also emphasizing the importance of considering other countries around the world.
He also called on the public to buy local and strengthen the economy, given the potential tariff issues with the neighboring country, and invited other Mexican states to enjoy Michoacán carnitas.
In addition, 1,275 trademarks were registered with the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) for the state, and the existence of eight brands with designations of origin was highlighted, including mezcal, hibiscus from La Huacana, hammered copper from Santa Clara, and the Catrinas of Capula, among others.
The federal secretary noted that the state saw a 126% increase in the number of trademark certification applications. These will be evaluated for approval within the corresponding legal framework.
For his part, Castor Estrada Robles, director of the House of Handicrafts, expressed his gratitude for the collaborative work with the Ministry of Economic Development (SEDECO) regarding the various brands with designations of origin obtained for the state.
Finally, Claudio Méndez, from the Ministry of Economic Development, acknowledged the efforts of carnitas producers in fulfilling the requirements to become a certified brand and, eventually, a brand with a designation of origin.
