Querétaro International Airport (AIQ) is working on a detailed project plan that includes the construction of a new passenger terminal.
“What we’re aiming for is to have an infrastructure that will allow us to handle between 12 and 15 million passengers in the long term,” explained Jorge Gutiérrez de Velasco, general director of AIQ.
He added that this regional airport is close to Mexico City and the Bajío Airport in Guanajuato, and is important for traffic along the Bajío economic corridor.
Regarding cargo traffic, AIQ currently ranks fourth nationally, but it also wants to grow in that area.
“We are beginning the process of identifying the details of the detailed project plan. We expect to handle 2.5 million passengers in 2025, and what we’re looking for is that with the first phase of a new terminal, we can handle another 3 million passengers, reaching 5 or 6 million travelers,” he mentioned.
In terms of cargo, the airport expects to close the year with 80,000 tons handled, but plans to reach more than 250,000 tons over time.
Some factors driving the airport’s growth are the economic development of the state and the Bajío economic region, which is boosted by industries such as automotive, aerospace, and metalworking, the executive stated.
The Querétaro International Airport (AIQ) is located just 40 minutes from the city of Querétaro. It is 10 kilometers from Federal Highway 57 and 1 kilometer from the first rail crossing on the Mexico City-Northern Mexico route (Ferromex and CPKC).
National and international airlines operate from the airport.
Aeroméxico, American Airlines, Iberojet, TAR, United, Viva, and Volaris operate there, offering flights to destinations including Atlanta, Detroit, Dallas, Madrid, Mazatlán, Torreón, Cancún, and Monterrey, among others.
According to Proyectos México, the airport has a runway measuring 3,500 meters by 45 meters and a passenger terminal of 5,950 square meters. It currently offers 19 passenger routes and three cargo routes.
Furthermore, they announced that an investment of half a million dollars will be channeled into an inclusion program for people with disabilities, with the goal of improving the airport’s accessibility for users.
“This is a project that is integrated into our strategic plan for an airport with a vision for 2050,” they emphasized.
