The deplorable urban development in the state of Baja California Sur, governed by Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío, has reached such critical levels that civil organizations have had to express their discontent.
On social media and in editorial publications, these organizations observe countless real problems with affordable housing, gentrification, and over-tourism that Baja California Sur faces.
On the website bscicletos.com, they point out that urban transformation decisions made at the state level could be top-down, without real participation from the communities, neighborhoods, and districts that inhabit the areas, with the governor deciding “at his whim.”
They indicate that the state lacks public investment, which is not fully allocated, for example, to housing for the most vulnerable population or to providing basic services lacking in the many neglected neighborhoods.
They reiterate that in Baja California Sur the problem is not producing more housing, but rather that the housing being produced is not affordable for the people who live in the various cities throughout the state, as local incomes are insufficient.
The lack of regulation by the state of Baja California Sur in real estate matters has turned housing into an object of speculation, increasing gentrification and displacing original residents.
