WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF A CHECKPOINT OR EXTORTION?

2

Fellow citizens, don’t let your year’s efforts go to waste at a checkpoint or on the highway. Record and report these incidents to put an end to the extortion attempts by federal, state, or municipal police this December. These activities are illegal and carry serious criminal penalties.

What to do:
Without a doubt, your best defense is your cell phone. If you are stopped by any officer from any agency and intimidated into paying, document it.

Remember, recording is not a crime; it is a right of every Mexican citizen, according to Articles 6 and 7 of the Constitution.
Recording an extortion attempt will serve as evidence and your only defense against abuse. If you deem it necessary, tell the officer on duty: “I am recording live for your safety and mine,” and say it loud and clear.
Record live: From the moment you are stopped at a checkpoint or roadblock, start live streaming on any platform.

That way, the video is uploaded and serves as evidence in case they confiscate your phone, which they shouldn’t if you don’t allow it. It’s another right they have.
Take the opportunity to learn the names and numbers on the license plates or IDs. Observe the license plates of the vehicles.

For your safety, always have your documents with you; don’t give them any reason to doubt you. These are documents like your vehicle’s temporary import permit, insurance, and driver’s license.
If possible, join caravans; that way, you’ll avoid being stopped by the alleged extortionists in uniform. Don’t go alone if you can.
Most importantly, don’t pay a single cent. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
