Numerous families eager to enjoy and sample a wide variety of dishes made with this iconic ingredient gathered yesterday at the Christmas edition of the Edam Cheese Fair in Gran Parque La Plancha.
From early morning, the aisles began to fill with aromas and colors that invited visitors to explore each of the stalls and try the different culinary offerings.
Some vendors noted that the rain on Friday temporarily kept visitors away; however, with the return of the good weather, the diners also returned, continuing to arrive to enjoy the fair and the dishes prepared with the special guest: Edam cheese.
As the day progressed, the atmosphere became more lively, with entire families strolling among the stalls and sharing the experience.
Mrs. Pilar Cortés noted that among the star products at her stall were the quesabirrias and burritos, which were very popular with attendees. She commented that the rain the day before yesterday reduced attendance, although yesterday there was already a better response from the public, so she was confident that the number of families would increase as the day progressed.
She reminded everyone that the weekend hours extended until 10 p.m. and that, for today, the last day, they would open at 10 a.m., so that families would have the whole day to explore the fair and enjoy the dishes at their leisure.
Desserts also played a prominent role at the festival. Oreo and strawberry cheesecakes, both made with Edam cheese, caught the attention of passersby, as did the lasagna with melted Edam cheese and Edam cheese cream, which—according to Pilar—is the star product of her stand.
They even offered free samples to those curious about the flavor of the cream, which generated a steady stream of visitors and a very positive response from families.
As the heat intensified during the day, Carlos Robles offered cacao horchata with Edam cheese, a refreshing combination that was well-received. He shared that, despite the rain, families responded very well, continuing to arrive even after the bad weather subsided, and yesterday numerous families could be seen enjoying the drinks.
Among the diners was Evelyn Flores, accompanied by her aunt Addy Escudero, originally from Tabasco and visiting the city, who tried a pineapple shaved ice with Edam cheese for the first time.
Both mentioned that they liked it very much and that, although they were already familiar with Edam cheese, they had never attended an expo of this kind, which they found to be an attractive and unique idea.
At the fair, one could find various food stalls offering items such as kibbeh, quesabirrias, the traditional marquesitas, cheesecakes, ice cream, frappes, shaved ice, and Edam cheese in its traditional presentations.
In addition, there was a stand selling accessories related to this cheese so beloved by Yucatecans, which enhanced the experience for attendees.
A dining area was also available for the comfort of families, as well as a play area for children.
Among the games, the classic Snakes and Ladders stood out, but in a modified version with mice and marquesitas (a type of crepe), which sparked the children’s curiosity and fun.
To complete the festive atmosphere, the most anticipated character for the little ones was among the crowd: Santa Claus, who visited some of the stands in search of his favorite dish, bringing smiles to faces as he went.
The fair ends today. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
