A foreign tourist was rescued by lifeguards from the General Directorate of Civil Protection and Firefighters after being caught in strong waves at Playa del Pueblo, which was crowded due to the Christmas holiday. The incident occurred around noon, when the beach was packed despite red flag warnings.

According to the lifeguards’ report, the woman entered the water even though conditions were adverse. Minutes later, a current pulled her out to sea, causing her to call for help. Civil Protection personnel on duty reacted immediately and managed to bring her to safety before the force of the waves swept her completely away from the shore.

As a result of this incident, Civil Protection personnel intensified preventive patrols to warn visitors about the risks of entering the water during red flag conditions, especially those who had been consuming alcoholic beverages. Lifeguards reminded the public that the strong waves and winds of the season increase rip currents, one of the main causes of accidents at this time of year.

The Director General of Civil Protection and Firefighters of Tulum, Rafael Domínguez Villanueva, reported that the lifeguards’ timely intervention prevented a tragedy. He noted that the woman did not sustain serious injuries and was treated at the scene, without requiring hospitalization.

Given the large crowds of beachgoers on December 25th, the agency reinforced surveillance at the main tourist spots. Operations focused on Conchitas Beach, Playa del Pueblo, and Punta Piedra, considered the areas with the highest number of visitors during this season.

Domínguez Villanueva reiterated the call to local, national, and international tourists to respect the signs and not enter the water when red flags are flying. He emphasized that these measures are not intended to restrict beach access, but rather to prevent accidents that could endanger lives.

Municipal authorities continue to urge residents to follow the instructions of lifeguards and report any emergencies to the local Civil Protection number.
