Alcohol consumption in the country has increased significantly, reaching almost three-quarters of the population between the ages of 12 and 65: details from the National Health and Nutrition Survey.

According to data recently released by Health Secretary David Kershenobich, alcohol consumption in the country has increased significantly, reaching almost three-quarters of the population.

According to the results of the National Health and Nutrition Survey (ENSANUT), the prevalence of alcohol consumption rose to 73.7% this year. This figure reflects not only a deeply ingrained habit but also an upward trend that worries health authorities due to its social and medical implications.

Number of Mexicans who tried alcohol for the first time is growing
Figures collected in the National Survey on Drug, Alcohol, and Tobacco Use (ENCODAT) revealed the following data and demographic groups:

The total population that has ever consumed alcohol increased, rising from 71.0% in 2016 to 73.7% in 2025.
Women saw the greatest increase in the average percentage of first-time alcohol consumption, which rose from 62.6% in 2016 to 69.3% in 2025.
Adolescent alcohol consumption in the “last year” decreased from 28.0% to 17.8%, which could be due to the wellness trends and lifestyles of younger generations.

Drug Use for ‘Experimentation’ Also on the Rise Among Adults
Experimental use of substances such as cannabis, hallucinogens, and amphetamine stimulants among adults increased from 10.6% in 2016 to 14.6% in 2025.

By revealing that 7.4 out of 10 Mexicans have consumed alcohol, and that consumption among women has risen dramatically, the survey shatters the myth that alcoholism is a predominantly male problem or one affecting marginalized communities.

The Secretary of Health emphasized that the problem is not only that more people are drinking, but that the age of initiation is getting younger, which increases the risk of developing physical dependence and chronic health problems before reaching adulthood.
