A Canadian woman was found this morning with visible signs of violence and suspected abuse, after being abandoned on the street at the intersection of Avenida Universidades and Paseo del Mayab, outside the Playa del Carmen campus of the Autonomous University of the State of Quintana Roo (UQROO).
According to information gathered at the scene, the woman was disoriented and had injuries to her face, as well as damaged clothing. After partially regaining consciousness, she asked for help from passersby, who then notified the authorities through the emergency number.
The woman stated that she did not remember exactly how she got to the location or the circumstances afterward. She indicated that the last thing she remembered was attending a gathering on the night of December 24th, where she was celebrating and accepted a drink offered by several men. She subsequently lost consciousness and, upon regaining consciousness, found herself alone, with visible injuries and signs suggesting she had been assaulted.
Officers from the Playa del Carmen Public Safety Secretariat arrived at the scene to provide first aid and ensure the woman’s safety. Due to the nature of the case, the Specialized Group for Attention to Family and Gender Violence (GEAVIG) was called in and activated the corresponding protocols.
Minutes later, an ambulance arrived to conduct an initial medical assessment and determined that she should be transported to a local hospital, where she would receive specialized care and undergo the necessary examinations to document her injuries.
Authorities reported that the victim will receive support throughout the legal process and will be put in contact with her country’s diplomatic mission for the corresponding procedures. The area where she was found was inspected as part of the initial investigation, while information is gathered to clarify the facts and identify those responsible.
