The Municipal Secretariat of Public Safety and Citizen Protection (SSPCM) confirmed that it is investigating an incident that occurred on Tuesday, December 31, when a municipal police officer allegedly solicited a $60 bribe from a U.S. citizen.
According to reports, the citizen had mistakenly entered the wrong lane at the San Ysidro border crossing, a situation the officer allegedly exploited to demand payment under the pretext of correcting the error.
The incident was captured on video and disseminated by media outlets, including Noticias de Tijuana. The footage quickly went viral on social media, generating public outrage.
Following the release of the video, the SSPCM reported that internal protocols have been activated to review the conduct of the officer involved, clarify the facts, and, if necessary, determine responsibility in accordance with current regulations. The corporation reiterated that this was an individual act, contrary to institutional principles, and emphasized that acts of corruption and abuses of authority will not be tolerated.
Finally, the SSPCM urged citizens to report any irregularities committed by public servants through 9-1-1, and reaffirmed its commitment to legality, transparency, and respect for the rights of those who travel through the city.
