U.S. Vice President JD Vance responded Thursday to a protester who interrupted his speech at the Republican Party’s midterm convention in Dallas while waving a Mexican flag, an episode he used to reaffirm American nationalism and attack the left.
“If you love Mexico so much, go there. I’ll buy you the plane ticket,” Vance said after the protester displayed the Mexican flag during his remarks.
The press present at the Republican convention, held ahead of the midterm elections at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, reported that a man carrying a tricolor flag was protesting in one of the venue’s aisles when the confrontation with the vice president occurred.
The vice president later described the flag as a “symbol of the extreme left” and argued that the man should have displayed the American flag. The protester was removed from the venue by security personnel.
It is the first Republican convention organized specifically at midterm, bringing together party leaders and candidates at a time when Republicans are seeking to maintain their majorities in Congress.
In his speech, Vance presented the elections as a battle to preserve Americans’ “birthright” and accused Democrats of promoting policies that threaten the family, security, economy, and national identity.
He also linked irregular immigration to competition for jobs and housing and said that Americans had seen their country “stolen” and handed over to foreigners.
