Sheinbaum exposes Reforma for using photos of AMLO with Maduro in accusations from Calderón’s six-year term

Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum denounced the editorial dishonesty of the Reforma newspaper after it published an article accusing Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro of allegedly operating drug trafficking from Mexico. The article included photographs of Maduro alongside former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, despite the fact that the alleged incidents took place between 2006 and 2008, when Felipe Calderón was president of Mexico.

During her morning press conference, Sheinbaum displayed the front page and the article’s content, in which Reforma included images of López Obrador and Maduro while making unsubstantiated accusations. However, the president emphasized that the text acknowledges from its very first paragraph that the events in question occurred when Maduro was Venezuela’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs, between 2006 and 2008.

“What do the photographs have to do with the article? This is Calderón’s term; the entire article refers to 2006, 2008, and here it mentions 2013 and 2011. So, where is Calderón in this photo with Hugo Chávez?” Sheinbaum questioned.

The president clarified that she is not making any accusations against Nicolás Maduro, as she is unaware of the veracity and origin of the published information. What she did point out, she said, is the editorially biased use of images to induce a false and deliberate political narrative.

Sheinbaum also recalled that, during López Obrador’s administration, Mexico acted as a mediator in dialogue processes between the Venezuelan government, sectors of the opposition, and the United States.

“There were opposition members who sought refuge in the Mexican embassy in Venezuela… But this desire, which the opposition has always expressed, ‘Mexico is going after Venezuela,'” she explained.

Finally, the mayor emphasized that citizens have the right to truthful information and that the media has an ethical responsibility to its audiences.

“No to the construction of a supposed truth when it is manipulated,” she asserted.
