The Federal Government announced that the Ministry of Economy has initiated an antidumping investigation into U.S. apple imports, at the request of the Regional Agricultural Union of Fruit Growers of the State of Chihuahua (Unifrut).

Data from both Unifrut and the Agri-Food and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) show that in 2024, the state of Chihuahua produced eight and a half out of every ten apples nationwide.

The Ministry of Economy’s document initiating the dumping investigation into U.S. imports states that, “according to SIAP-SADER data, national apple production takes place in 22 states.”

And “the main producing states in 2024 were Chihuahua, with an 85.2% share, Coahuila with 5.0%, Puebla with 4.1%, Durango and Veracruz with 1.2% each, and Zacatecas with 0.8%, which together accounted for 97.5% of national production.”

In Mexico, the national supply “is supplemented by imports mainly from the United States, Chile, South Africa, Canada, China, New Zealand, and Argentina.”

The apples in question are used both for direct consumption and for the preparation of various foods such as juices, ciders, and other derivatives like vinegar, jams, purees, and concentrates for beverages and food, primarily.

The Ministry of Economy noted that Unifrut is made up of 16 agricultural associations in the state of Chihuahua and represents 85.2% of total national production. Those from other states contributed an additional 6.6%, which together account for 91.8% of total national production.
