This Monday, January 12, 2026, marked the return to classes in Oaxaca after a long break for more than 800,000 elementary and middle school students. For this reason, the Traffic Police, along with the Municipal Police and education authorities, are working together this morning to organize vehicular traffic and prevent accidents due to the cold and rainy weather.

In the capital city, traffic control measures are already in place, specifically on Eduardo Mata Avenue from Armenta y López Street to the extension of Xicoténcatl Street, to expedite traffic flow in the area.

In the historic center, on Independencia Avenue, Central Avenue, and along the BinniBus routes, traffic operations are being implemented to facilitate the passage of hundreds of students walking with their parents to schools, which opened at 7:00 a.m. throughout almost the entire state of Oaxaca.

A cold and rainy atmosphere is also being felt in the Papaloapan Basin, the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, the Central Valleys, and the Mixteca region. Very cold conditions persist in these areas due to the North wind event in the Gulf of Mexico and the passage of Cold Front No. 27. Despite this, classes were not rescheduled or canceled; only recommendations were issued to mitigate the effects of the cold and rainy weather.

As of this morning, no blockades by civil associations or social groups are expected, according to the Secretary of Government. However, if any problems or protests arise that result in traffic issues, El Heraldo de México Oaxaca will be monitoring the situation and will report on it.

Regarding the highways, on Monday, January 12, 2026, there were problems on the Tehuacán-Oaxaca highway at kilometer 177 due to a multi-vehicle collision. The highway is closed. The alternative route is the federal highway between Huajuapan and Oaxaca, which connects Puebla and Oaxaca and has an exit towards Mexico City.

The Mitla-Tehuantepec and Oaxaca-Puerto Escondido highways are experiencing significant traffic flow. However, the problem here stems from the recent rains, as well as responding to accidents that occurred in the last 24 hours, especially on the Oaxaca-Puerto Escondido highway. Additionally, there is ongoing work to address and repair landslides caused by the heavy rains from Cold Front No. 27 and the 2025 rainy season in July.

Another highway currently under constant monitoring is the Trans-Isthmus Highway, which runs between the Costa Chica region, the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, and the border with Chiapas. There is currently rain, a wet road surface, and winds with gusts exceeding 100 km/h due to the Norte wind event affecting the Isthmus region between the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean.

The recommendation is to avoid traveling on this highway, especially for heavy vehicles, as the winds can cause them to overturn. Therefore, the State Coordination of Civil Protection and Risk Management (CEPCyGR) advises against traveling and recommends seeking shelter until the effects of the weather subside, which are expected to last at least the next 24 hours.
