Andrés Conesa, CEO of Aeroméxico, stated that the structural solution to the saturation of Mexico City International Airport (AICM) lies in the construction of a new Terminal 3, which should be larger than Terminals 1 and 2 combined.
The executive explained that the goal would be to increase AICM’s capacity from 50 to 75 million passengers annually, and that, by adding the operations of AIFA and Toluca Airport, the metropolitan airport system could handle up to 100 million passengers per year.
Conesa detailed that studies indicate the expansion should take place on the Terminal 2 side, although this would imply relocating workshops, including Aeroméxico’s maintenance center, to the Terminal 1 area. He emphasized that the main technical challenge lies in the infrastructure of the fuel farms, located in that sector, whose reconfiguration would be complex due to the jet fuel supply pipelines. The proposal brings back to the table the debate about the real capacity of the AICM and the need for long-term airport planning for the Valley of Mexico.
