Arms trafficking through Baja California is destined for Sinaloa and Durango

According to seizures made by the State Police, the arms trafficking that crosses through Baja California is primarily destined for the states of Sinaloa and Durango, reported Laureano Carrillo Rodríguez, head of the state’s Secretariat of Citizen Security.

The official estimated that around 70% of the weapons seized in the state were manufactured in the United States, while the rest come from Europe and Asia; however, he acknowledged that he does not know if they entered through any checkpoint or other border crossing.

“The weapons we have seized in large quantities are going to the states of Durango and Sinaloa, where there is a conflict between criminal groups,” Carrillo Rodríguez stated during the state government’s weekly press conference.

He indicated that approximately four thousand weapons were seized last year, while 135 have been seized so far this year.

Regarding recent seizures, he highlighted three significant ones: one inside a warehouse located between Tecate and Tijuana, near the El Niño neighborhood; Another 51 weapons were found in the trunk of a vehicle, along with a U.S.-made rocket launcher.

“The rocket launcher is a weapon designed for armored vehicles; it can also be used to attack people on the other side of a wall because it has great penetration,” explained the head of the SSCBC (Secretariat of Citizen Security of Baja California).

He noted that firearm seizures weaken criminal organizations and prevent weapons from reaching their final destination, which can help save lives.

He estimated that the number of seizures recorded in the first days of January projects a 20% increase in arms trafficking compared to 2025, so efforts are being redoubled to detect and seize this type of weaponry.
