Blockades in Veracruz due to medicine shortages and the cancellation of surgeries for children with cancer; protesters demand the resignation of the Welfare delegate

Mothers of children with cancer, patients at the Pediatric Hospital, demanded the resignation of the Welfare delegate, Roberto Ramos Alor, after accusing him of a lack of supplies, medications, medical equipment, and the cancellation of surgeries.

By blocking 20 de Noviembre Avenue, where the Pediatric Tower is located, the group of mothers also criticized Rocío Nahle, who eight days earlier had boasted of a 90% supply of medications.

On Monday, January 12th of this year, during the launch of the distribution of 10,625,716 units of medications and medical supplies, Nahle boasted: “Currently, there is an average supply of 90 percent in the units, and the challenge for this year is to reach 100 percent, particularly in specialized medications,” but the dissatisfied mothers today refuted her claim.

That day, Nahle was accompanied by the coordinator of the IMSS-Bienestar programs in Veracruz, Roberto Ramos Alor, and emphasized that the timely supply of medications is a priority for her administration to guarantee the right to health, especially in the state’s most remote communities, through efficient and organized logistics.

But today, relatives of children in the oncology ward of the children’s hospital, with banners and slogans, denounced the situation: “Roberto Ramos Alor, get to work and stop stealing” and “Governor, the hospital, with its severe shortages, is falling apart.”

They accused the lack of supplies, medications, and equipment of putting their patients’ lives at risk: “There are several patients waiting for surgery, some urgently.”

Yunuet Yazmin Segovia García and Cora de Jesús Rodríguez, representatives of families of children with cancer, accused the hospital of postponing surgeries daily due to a lack of supplies: catheters, X-ray plates, diagnostic tests, and other anesthesia equipment.

They pointed out: “We have not had a solution to the problems in the hospital. There are mothers who need their children to have surgeries. Yesterday, a minor was scheduled for surgery, but it wasn’t done because the X-ray film was given to someone else, and this is urgent. They have been waiting since December 15th. There is no equipment, and surgeries are being canceled. Children come for surgery and are sent home.”
