Waterfalls freeze in Veracruz due to cold fronts

The drop in temperatures associated with recent cold fronts has caused unusual effects and risks in various regions of Veracruz.

In the High Mountains region, residents of La Perla reported frozen waterfalls in the community of Potrero Nuevo, a rare phenomenon that went viral on social media due to the magnitude of the ice formed on the rock faces.

According to the National Water Commission (Conagua) and the state Civil Protection agency, the cold air mass has also generated strong northerly winds, with gusts reaching 83.9 km/h in the South Bay of Veracruz and 78.8 km/h in Antón Lizardo. These conditions are causing high waves and posing a risk to small vessels.

Meteorological observatories reported 29.3 millimeters of accumulated rainfall in Coatzacoalcos, in addition to drizzle and fog in Xalapa, Orizaba, and other mountainous areas, where visibility has been reduced.

Although the cold weather eased in recent hours, with brief periods of sunshine in some coastal regions, meteorologists indicated that low temperatures will persist.

Civil Protection is maintaining vigilance in mountainous regions due to the possibility of landslides, mudslides, and river flooding, especially in the Papaloapan, Coatzacoalcos, and Tonalá river basins.

On the coast, waves have reached between 1 and 2 meters, with increases forecast during new northerly wind events.

Specialists from the National Water Commission (Conagua) explain that the wind chill has intensified due to the combination of high humidity, cloud cover, and wind, creating a “humid cold” that increases discomfort even when temperatures are not extreme.

Authorities recommend that the public stay informed, secure objects susceptible to wind damage, and take extra precautions in mountainous and coastal areas.
