Learn all about the Chinese New Year parade in Mexico City’s Historic Center: dragons, costume contest, martial arts, and more.
If you love colorful, traditional, and high-energy plans, I have a fantastic one for you to add to your calendar. With the arrival of the Chinese New Year, the Historic Center comes alive with the highly anticipated dragon parade, an event where you’ll not only see these impressive figures parading through the streets, but there will also be a costume contest, martial arts demonstrations, and much more. Here at Where to Go, we’ll tell you everything you need to know to fully enjoy this celebration.
To welcome the Chinese New Year 2026, the lunar calendar brings us the energy of the Fire Horse, a symbol of movement, courage, and profound changes. This new cycle invites us to leave behind what no longer serves us, make clear decisions, and dare to move forward with strength. It’s a year that encourages action and challenges us to step outside our comfort zones, with an energy that never rests and promises transformation.
In this spirit, the National Museum of World Cultures is already preparing for a grand celebration open to the public. The event will take place on Saturday, February 7, 2026, when the Chinese New Year parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Moneda Street, just steps from the Zócalo, according to information from the Chinese Community of Mexico.
During the parade, you’ll see more than six lions and around 30 dragons, which will depart from the museum, proceed to the Zócalo, and return to the museum for a much more elaborate final presentation. Once inside the museum, the festivities continue with traditional dances, a fashion show, martial arts demonstrations, lectures, and workshops, all with free admission.
In addition, the call for entries for the Eighth Annual Chinese Zodiac Costume Contest – Year of the Horse – is now open. You can participate and win cell phones and other prizes. This contest, organized in collaboration with the Chinese Embassy in Mexico, the Chinese Cultural Center in Mexico, and the Chinese Community of Mexico, has become one of the most anticipated events of this celebration in the heart of the Historic Center.
The 2026 Chinese New Year Costume Contest is divided into two categories: individual and group (2 to 5 people). Non-Chinese permanent residents of Mexico are eligible to participate. Registration is free, with a limit of 40 participants per category, and will be open until February 2, 2026, via QR code. Each participant or team may register only one entry and must attend the parade in the Historic Center.
The mandatory theme is the Horse; original costumes or decorative pieces are welcome, with bonus points awarded for the use of recycled materials. In the group category, all members must be present before the judges. The five-member jury will evaluate entries based on relevance to the Year of the Horse (40%), creative and aesthetic design (40%), and production quality (20%); their decision will be final.
The judging and announcement of winners will take place on February 7, 2026, at the National Museum of World Cultures, following the parade, with a brief presentation (1 minute) by each participant or team. The awards ceremony will be held on February 14 during the opening of the 5th Chinese New Year Festival at the National Center for the Arts.
