Nudism seeks to come out of the closet in Xalapa

Something’s stirring in Xalapa, and it’s not the traffic. The emergence of the so-called Xalapa Nudist Biosphere Community has begun to attract attention on social media. This group, operating on the X platform, openly promotes nudism in the Veracruz capital and throughout the state.

Under the motto “Return to nature. Understand nature. Care for nature. Accept nature. Be nature,” the collective invites citizens to “meet in their natural state” and to “normalize nudity,” at least—they clarify—one day at a time. The message is clear: less clothing, more environmental awareness.

With messages that blend philosophy, ecology, and a touch of unintentional irony, they assert that “it’s easier to trust those who hide nothing” and that “nature is best enjoyed naked.” All of this is based on the premise that the human body is as natural as a tree, even if in Xalapa that means facing the elements, prying eyes, and perhaps the surprise of a passerby.

The group proposes to begin normalizing nudity in “natural settings” such as showers, locker rooms, or beaches, reminding us that nudity—they say—is our original state, only forgotten due to the social custom of covering everything, even the obvious.

While some see the initiative as an expression of bodily freedom and others as just another eccentricity in the age of social media, the fact remains that nudism has arrived in Xalapa. It remains to be seen whether the city is ready for the debate, or at least ready to avoid being scandalized by exposed skin.
