A federal judge granted a temporary injunction to suspend bullfights in the municipality of Querétaro, following a legal challenge filed by the organization Animal Heroes.
The measure, for now, prevents the holding of events involving animal abuse, including the bullfight scheduled for January 30 in Provincia Juriquilla.
The event was to feature bullfighters Octavio García “El Payo,” Juan Ortega, Pablo Aguado, and Diego San Román, but was halted following the court ruling.
The Municipality of Querétaro confirmed that it was notified by the Seventh District Court for Civil, Administrative, and Labor Matters of an incidental ruling. The ruling orders the suspension of events involving animal abuse.
In light of this decision, the Municipal Government Secretariat announced that it will cancel the permit previously granted for the January 30 bullfight in Provincia Juriquilla.
Regarding this, Jerónimo Sánchez, director of Animal Heroes, explained that the injunction has immediate effect while the merits of the case are being resolved.
“A judge has just granted us a provisional suspension of the bullfight that was planned to take place in Provincia de Juriquilla, in the state of Querétaro.”
The suspension was obtained despite the fact that, since December 2012, bullfighting, also known as Fiesta Brava, has been declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of the state of Querétaro, which had allowed bullfights to be held under that legal framework.
However, the injunction establishes that events where animals are tortured cannot be authorized, even if they have prior municipal permits.
“All permits granted by the municipality of Querétaro for events where bulls or other animals are tortured are also suspended.”
This is not the first case. Last March, the Municipality of Querétaro halted a bullfight taking place in El Salitre, following an injunction filed by animal rights groups.
For now, the suspension is temporary, but it prohibits bullfights in the municipality while the judge reviews the case.
