State and municipal authorities, along with the National Chamber of the Restaurant and Seasoned Food Industry (Canirac) of Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, officially announced the third annual Guerrero Culinario festival, to be held on February 7th and 8th at the municipal sports complex in this port city.
At a press conference this Friday at La Terracita restaurant on La Madera beach, Indira Hernández Hernández, president of Canirac in this municipality, explained that the festival aims to connect with the state’s roots through its traditional cooks, mezcal producers, and artisans. She added that this year’s theme is “Eight Regions, Eight Flavors in One Destination.”
“Guerrero Culinario is more than a festival; it’s a meeting place where we can reconnect with our roots, with our traditional cooks, producers, and artisans, who work tirelessly to preserve our culture and the identity of the entire state.” Indira Hernández announced that this year’s edition will have a “secret touch” by merging with the Agustín Basurto Festival to celebrate Guerrero’s music. In addition to the food fair, podcasts and mezcal tastings will be held at the Costa Grande Archaeological Museum in this port city on February 8th.
Guerrero’s Secretary of Tourism, Simón Quiñones Orozco, highlighted that the state leads the nation in community-based culinary training.
“Guerrero has the highest number of certified traditional cooks through a standard accredited by the Ministry of Public Education in conjunction with CONOCER (National Council for Standardization and Certification of Labor Competencies). Guerrero has a program that increases the number of certified traditional cooks every year, and this year will be no exception. We have 45 certified cooks, making it the state with the highest number of certified traditional cooks.” She added that Ixtapa Zihuatanejo stands out in the culinary tourism sector because new generations of traditional cooks and chefs are emerging, contributing to its gastronomic diversity.
The mayor of Zihuatanejo, Lizette Tapia Castro, welcomed the participants and reiterated the municipality’s support for activities that strengthen local identity and tourism.
“Guerrero Culinario is not just a festival to enjoy delicious food; it’s a window into our state’s identity. As the secretary mentioned, gastronomy is a fundamental part of our tourism offerings. The fact that we have all eight regions of Guerrero represented here in one place, on our municipal sports field, is a unique opportunity for both locals and tourists.”
Admission to the event at the municipal sports field will be free, and attendees will only pay for their purchases directly to the producers, artisans, and traditional cooks. Present at this press conference were the executive director of the Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo Convention and Visitors Bureau, Pedro Castelán Reyna; the municipal director of Tourism for Zihuatanejo, Jesús Gallegos Galván; traditional cook Alicia Pérez Villegas; and the representative of the Agustín Basurto Festival, Pablo Deleh Vargas Reyes.
