On the afternoon of Monday, February 2, 2026, Governor Javier May Rodríguez led the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Villahermosa Convention Center.

The project, which represents an investment of 2 billion pesos, is part of the Villahermosa 2030 initiative and is scheduled for completion in December 2027, generating 1,500 direct and indirect jobs.

The event took place in the parking lot of Parque Tabasco, and Governor May was accompanied by Jorge Bracanonte, President of the Political Coordination Board of the local Congress; Carlos Efraín Reséndez Bocanegra, President of the Superior Court of Justice; and Yolanda Osuna Huerta, Mayor of Centro.

The technical explanation of the project was provided by Daniel Arturo Casasús Ruiz, head of the Secretariat of Territorial Planning and Public Works (SOTOP), who stated that the center’s function will be to host large-scale events.

To this end, Paseo Tabasco Avenue will be widened, facilitating access from various parts of the city. He indicated that the new Convention Center will have a forum with a capacity for up to 8,000 people and an auditorium for 4,000 attendees.

It will also feature an open area for large-scale events with a capacity for 80,000 people, in addition to parking for 4,000 vehicles.

The total investment will be 2 billion pesos, and it is expected to generate 1,500 jobs, both direct and indirect. He noted that the goal is to have it ready by December 2027.

In his remarks, Governor Javier May Rodríguez affirmed that the Tabasco Convention Center fulfills the citizens’ right to live in a modern city by providing space for large events and boosting the local economy.

He reiterated that the construction will maintain an investment of 2 billion pesos and generate 1,500 jobs, which, he said, represents a watershed moment in the history of Tabasco.

May Rodríguez asserted that Villahermosa remained neglected for decades due to governments that prioritized short-term projects. However, he maintained that the new Convention Center will be a landmark project that will boost tourism and investment in the Tabasco capital, as part of the strategic projects of the Villahermosa 2030 Plan.

Shortly before the laying of the first stone, the state governor presided over the installation of a time capsule at the site. This capsule contains images and data of the city as it is today and is intended to be opened upon completion of the project to document the changes in Villahermosa’s appearance.
