Zacatecas recorded only three homicides in January 2026, reaching its lowest monthly figure in over 11 years, according to preliminary figures released by the federal government.

The daily report issued by the Mexican government’s Security Cabinet specifies that the only homicide victims were recorded on January 9, with two murders, and on January 14, incidents reported in the municipalities of Saín Alto and Fresnillo.

The most recent historical record of a homicide rate equivalent to that of the beginning of 2026 corresponds to June 2014.

If the homicide rate for January 2026 is compared to that of January 2025, the decrease was 88%, since 25 victims were recorded in the first month of the previous year.

According to data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), Zacatecas ended 2025 with 144 intentional homicides, ranking it as the eighth state with the lowest incidence of this crime in the country.

Furthermore, it was the state with the largest reduction in homicides throughout the year, with a decrease of 71.1%, followed by Chiapas and Quintana Roo, whose reductions were 58.6% and 56.8%, respectively.

In Zacatecas, the closest precedent for a similar homicide rate dates back to 2010, when 143 cases were recorded; while in 2011—the first year of Miguel Alonso’s administration—the figure rose to 290, subsequently maintaining an upward trend until reaching a record high of 1,741 homicides in 2021.
