The well-known restaurant La Cocina del Jey, located in the capital of Veracruz, announced that it will not be broadcasting the Super Bowl this Sunday, February 8, as a show of solidarity with the Mexican migrant community living in the United States.
Through its social media, the establishment announced its decision, contrasting with the majority of restaurants, bars, and cantinas in Xalapa, which have launched promotions to attract customers with the broadcast of the NFL final game between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks.
In its message, La Cocina del Jey stated:
“Today we choose to support our migrant community. In solidarity with migrants and given the current situation in the United States, we will not be broadcasting the Super Bowl this February 8.”
Furthermore, the restaurant announced that it will donate 10 percent of its Sunday sales to the Casa del Migrante (Migrant Shelter), closing its announcement with the phrase: “Thank you for being part of a community with a conscience.”
The stance generated diverse reactions on social media, given that Xalapa is a city where American football boasts a large fan base and long-standing teams, from youth leagues to adult leagues.
Meanwhile, social media is abuzz with invitations and promotions from restaurants, bars, and cantinas to watch the Super Bowl, an event that typically generates significant economic activity for the restaurant industry.
In Xalapa, the Super Bowl is a time when families and groups of friends gather to enjoy the game, whether at restaurants or private homes, where food and beverage purchases also increase.
La Cocina del Jey’s decision stands out as a gesture of social activism within the local food sector, prioritizing a social cause over a high-impact commercial event.
