People from the community who wish to join legally can do so by going to the civil registry.
In two years, 242 equal marriages have been carried out in the civil registry in Cancun, some within the collective wedding event held by the municipality of Benito Juárez on February 14.
Although the call has already closed, at least two same-sex couples sought information on how to participate this year, as the approval of the documentation to join in marriage is still pending.
Nohamy Hermida Nieves, head of the Directorate of Attention to Sexual Diversity in the municipality of Benito Juárez, indicated that on the part of the community, the response to this call that takes place every year has been quite positive.
“Between three to four couples approach the address asking for the requirements, and we send them to the civil registry, so that they can comply with the relevant documentation to participate in collective weddings,” he said.
According to figures from the civil registry of the municipality of Benito Juárez, on the issue of equal marriages.
In 2024, there were 63 unions between men and 73 between women, making a total of 136.
In 2025, 56 unions between men and 50 between female couples were registered, with a total of 106 unions.
He recalled that equal marriage is totally legal and recognized in Cancun and throughout the state of Quintana Roo since 2012, being one of the first places in Mexico to allow it.
Same-sex couples can marry civilly without the need for amparos, enjoying the same rights and obligations, including concubinage recognized since 2021.
Although the call for collective weddings 2026 has already closed, people from the community who wish to join legally, can do so by going to the civil registry, the main requirements being:
- The marriage application
- Certified birth certificates of both parties
- Valid official identification (INE, passport).
Proof of address and medical certificates, and prenuptial talks. In addition to the proof of non-delinquent maintenance debtor.
