Influenza deaths rise in Hidalgo; it ranks second nationally

The state of Hidalgo ended the first month of 2026 with eight deaths from influenza, a figure that places the state second in the nation for the highest number of deaths from this disease.

According to the latest weekly report from the Federal Ministry of Health, the state is only surpassed by Puebla, which leads the list with nine deaths.

In Hidalgo, the increase in mortality accelerated during the last week of January. As of epidemiological week 4, three additional deaths were confirmed, as the state had recorded five deaths in the previous period (January 18-24).

Regarding the spread of the virus, Hidalgo has accumulated 259 positive cases of influenza, a significant increase compared to the 227 infections reported just seven days earlier.

The speed of the outbreak at the beginning of this year contrasts sharply with the statistics from the previous year.

Hidalgo had ended 2025 with only one death linked to this virus; however, the trend changed abruptly in the first days of January, when the second death was confirmed, triggering a surge that now places the state among the top in the nation for influenza mortality.

Sixty-two deaths from influenza have been confirmed in Mexico during the 2025-2026 winter season.

Given this situation, health authorities have intensified their calls for prevention. To break the chain of transmission and prevent severe cases of the disease, vaccination sites have been set up in various public spaces throughout the municipalities of Hidalgo.

In addition to the influenza vaccine, health brigades are offering immunizations against COVID-19 and measles, urging the population—especially at-risk groups such as children, the elderly, and people with comorbidities—to come and complete their vaccination schedules free of charge.
