In 2016, immunity from prosecution was eliminated in Jalisco for mayors and state officials. This decision was key because it allowed authorities to act without the political shield that often hinders justice. A clear example was the case of the former mayor of Tequila, Diego Navarro, accused of ties to organized crime, whose capture was facilitated by the absence of this privilege.
In many cases, immunity has served more to protect corrupt officials than to defend public service. And like this one, there are several examples in Mexican politics.
That is why we must support and demand the elimination of constitutional immunity at the national level for all politicians within the upcoming electoral reform. The law must be applied equally to everyone, without exception.
