This morning, a group of residents from the indigenous community of San Martín Tepetlixpan marched to kilometer 32.5 of the Mexico-Querétaro highway, near the municipality of Cuautitlán Izcalli in the State of Mexico.
The residents began the protest to demand solutions to problems related to the Western Emission Tunnel; they cited issues with safety, hygiene, road resurfacing, and other matters.
As a result, they blocked all the side lanes of the highway, but threatened to extend the blockade to the center lanes if their demands were not met.
Authorities arrived at the scene to speak with the residents. Meanwhile, alternative routes such as the center lanes or the Cuautitlán-Tlalnepantla highway were suggested.
About two hours later, the protesters decided to lift the blockade to avoid further disruption to motorists heading towards Mexico City.
However, they warned that they could resume their protest next Friday at the Tepotzotlán tollbooth.
“We are living in a latent, deadly risk… They are treating us like we are a latrine,” said the protesters, who reported that allergies have skyrocketed in the area and the smell is unbearable.
