The Baja Brewing Company and Rancho Carisuva Donkey Foundation reported that their donkeys were stolen and killed in Baja California Sur.
The founders of the donkey sanctuary explained that the donkeys were stolen from their grazing area, with only two surviving out of the original 17.
The founders of the Donkey Foundation, which works alongside Baja Brewing Company and Rancho Carisuva, shared the harrowing experience of the murder of the donkeys they were protecting.
According to their account, these donkeys had been cared for for over nine years at their sanctuary in Baja California Sur, and were considered pets.
However, tragedy struck their donkey sanctuary when they returned from grazing, and only two showed signs of having been tied with wire.
They also shared that the fate of the rest of their animals was imminent, knowing they had been stolen from their grazing area and killed. They claim to have evidence, though not conclusive.
“Our donkeys went out to graze as they do every year, but this time they didn’t return. The ranch hands searched for them for days. (…) Our donkeys were taken from their grazing land and their final destination was death. Of 17 donkeys, 15 disappeared, and two—Quequito and Juanita—managed to escape and return.”
The donkey sanctuary reiterated that its work protecting this species will continue because “they are still being illegally hunted for their meat,” and they also reminded everyone that they are endangered.
Furthermore, they pointed out that in Mexico “there are no laws” that explicitly protect donkeys because they are endangered.
“We need a bill that protects donkeys once and for all.”
