Huatulco seeks the blue flag: beaches under inspection for cleanliness and safety

The beaches of the Bays of Huatulco are under review to aspire to the Blue Flag, the international distinction that rewards clean, safe beaches with good environmental practices. According to reports from El Imparcial de Oaxaca, local authorities and tourism service providers reinforced cleaning and maintenance work while preparing for inspections.

The Blue Flag, administered by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), requires four pillars: water quality, environmental management, safety and services, and environmental education. To meet them, it is not enough to clean the sand; Constant water monitoring, proper waste management, signage, rescue modules, and informative activities for visitors and businesses are required.

In practice, this involves daily work and actions: improving discharges and treatment plants, installing more containers and toilets, training lifeguards and local brigades, and promoting campaigns for tourists and residents to reduce plastics and respect sensitive areas. Residents and merchants consulted by El Imparcial de Oaxaca agree that the certification can attract more visitors and improve the economy, but they warn that it also requires investment and permanent vigilance.

The challenges are not minor. The rainy season increases the risk of runoff and pollution, and the dispersion of responsibilities between municipal and state agencies and the private sector complicates coordination. In addition, maintaining the certification requires practices to be maintained all year round, not only during the high season.

For the local community, the possibility of obtaining the Blue Flag is more than a tourist seal: it is an opportunity to take care of the coastline as a shared heritage. From community cleaning to the denunciation of discharges, citizen participation will be key for Huatulco not only to aspire to the distinction, but to maintain it.

The evaluation process includes documentary reviews and field inspections; municipal authorities told El Imparcial de Oaxaca that the results will be known once the cycle of reviews is concluded, in the coming months. Meanwhile, the reconciliation between tourism and environmental protection remains the central challenge.
