The Sinaloa State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) confirmed Tuesday that the body found in the trunk of an abandoned pickup truck on the Culiacán-El Dorado highway on Sunday, February 8, belongs to Sergio Rodolfo Cázares Zambada, nephew of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada García.

According to the state’s Attorney General, Claudia Zulema Sánchez Kondo, the body was identified on Monday, February 9, by direct relatives at the Homicide Unit and was subsequently released to his family.

Cázares Zambada, 41, and son of Águeda Zambada García, is a direct relative of the former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, whose arrest in the United States in 2014 sparked a conflict between the Los Chapitos and Los Mayos factions and triggered a wave of violence in the region.

The discovery occurred after a 911 call reported an abandoned gray Ford Bronco on the shoulder of the southbound lane of the highway, in front of the Agronomy Faculty of the Autonomous University of Sinaloa (UAS), in the Costa Rica district.

Members of the National Guard, the Mexican Army, and state authorities responded to the scene and, upon inspecting the vehicle, found the body inside a suitcase in the trunk.

The body showed signs of violence and gunshot wounds. The vehicle was impounded for further investigation.

Sergio Cázares resided in the Las Quintas subdivision of Culiacán. His murder occurred within a context of violence in Sinaloa.
