The restaurant sector in Tampico and the southern region of Tamaulipas is preparing for the expected influx of visitors for the FIFA World Cup, the most important event Mexico will host in 2026. While the National Chamber of the Restaurant and Seasoned Food Industry (Canirac) is providing training to its members, it is estimated that 12,000 businesses in the area will be under the supervision of the State Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks (Coepris).

Business owners in the food service industry held a meeting with the state health authority to learn about the updated requirements from the federal and state health departments for the sporting event, which is expected to draw fans from Europe, Asia, and South America, given its proximity to Mexico City and Monterrey, two of the venues chosen by FIFA.

The coordinator of the State Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks, Nicolás Berumen, reported that 22,000 employees of establishments that sell prepared food have been trained, and that they are maintaining vigilance and verifying permits, taking into account the Easter holiday period before the competition.

“We have two important dates this year: Holy Week and the World Cup. Given the large number of tourists, we are ensuring that the approximately 12,000 businesses in Tampico and Ciudad Madero have all the necessary permits and licenses in place. So far, the destination is ready to receive these visitors,” he stated.
