Tourism entrepreneur Eduardo Albor Villanueva, partner and shareholder of Dolphin Discovery, was arrested Thursday afternoon in the resort city of Cancún, Mexico, after being stopped by National Guard agents in the city center.
According to initial reports, the incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. local time, when the businessman was driving through downtown Cancún and was stopped by the agents.
The businessman was riding in the back of a pickup truck and, according to videos circulating on social media, struggled with two agents who were trying to remove him from the vehicle.
The officers, who were wearing National Guard uniforms, managed to subdue the businessman.
According to witnesses, the detainee identified himself as Eduardo Albor Villanueva, a businessman involved in the tourism and investment sectors in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and the United States.
Most of his ventures are located in the Mexican Caribbean, specifically in Cancún, the Riviera Maya, and Isla Mujeres.
Since last year, the company has faced various legal proceedings in the United States and Mexico, amidst a commercial dispute over its Cancún facilities, where its corporate offices are located. These offices were seized by one of the parties involved but were later recovered.
Several of the companies that were part of the group, including a publishing group, were dismantled.
Furthermore, the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) of Mexico’s Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) ordered the freezing of bank accounts belonging to Controladora Dolphin, the holding company through which the group’s businesses operate.
According to information gathered, the organization’s lawyers received a federal court’s denial of their request for an injunction to unfreeze the accounts.
